TiVo drive expansion works seamlessly July 25, 2010 J. S. Peterson (Suburban Maryland) Just what I needed and it works perfectly. Installation takes a couple minutes and you have to read through the TiVo instructions, which are easy. Pop-up screens lead you through to verify your intention to sync the drives (which you are warned will likely erase most (but not necessarily all) recorded stuff already on your TiVo, but it works great. Very quiet, too. Install and forget.
TIVO AND WESTERN DIGITAL SHOULD GET ACT TOGETHER July 20, 2010 Frank C. Panetta When I receieved this item, I was extremely excited. I couldn't wait to hook it to my HD Tivo. After hooking it up exactly according to directions (it's only the order of hookup)...Nothing. No recognition, no eSata expander recognized. But wait...there are all these Tivo compatible stickers. It must be a mistake or defective. After calling Tivo and trying a secondary way to boot (hold down pause + hit this & that), still NOTHING. No recognition of the device. The bad news from Tivo was that they despite the stickers, it wasn't on the list of compatible WD expanders. WHAT???? IS THIS A CRUEL JOKE? I'd like both their stocks to tank or worse. This is my last Tivo. Tivo for excluding regular external drives and forcing us to buy WD, and WD, for SAYING IT'S COMPATIBLE, PUTTING ON STICKERS WITH THE TIVO LOGO AND LYING! I heard it right from Tivo. This device "isn't on the compatible list". FCP
Great way to save money on Tivo! July 17, 2010 Alexa It works and is cheaper than buying through Tivo - what more do you need?
Bought this for a new HD Tivo last year - instead of buying the Tivo HD XL, I bought the one that had less memory, then got this expander pack for the same result and saved a ton of money!
It was very easy to install and haven't had to touch it since - set it and forget it! Even when moving from one tv to another, I didn't have to change or do anything at all.
Don't know if it works with or is even necessary for the latest version that Tivo is now pushing - the Tivo Premiere - but if you have anything below a Tivo HD and are satisfied with it but just want more memory - BUY THIS instead of upgrading to a new expensive Tivo!
fails too readily July 12, 2010 mikeminsussexnj I bought this item from Amazon in May and it had a complete disk failure by the end of June.
Works great with DirecTV July 6, 2010 Victor Chen (San Jose, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
With so many new programs coming out in HD, the DirecTV DVR in our living room fills up pretty quickly. Our children like to record their favorite programs, my wife likes to record her cooking shows, and I like to record movies, so our DVR fills up pretty fast. It seems we are constantly erasing unwatched programs to make room for more. Then I heard about the WD DVR Expander and it sounded too good to be true. It is one of maybe two external HDs that are currently compatible with DirecTV recorders. I ordered it from Amazon and received it within a couple of days. I followed the simple instructions and within 5 minutes, I had it booted up and working. I've had it now for 3 months and love it. We record all our favorite programs and don't feel compelled to immediately delete them lest we lose out on future scheduled programming. For those of you who have young children, you know that they often like to watch their same program/movie over and over. With the Expander, you can now "keep until I delete" hours of your children's favorite programs without having to worry about space availability. My wife and I also loved the "Planet Earth" series in HD and can finally store the entire series on our DVR without killing off 50% of the DVR's memory space. One word of caution however: when you do hook up the Expander, you will lose any programs you've stored on your current DVR, ie: it does not transfer over to the Expander. However, once you've got it set up, it works seamlessly with DirecTV ... you'll use the same buttons and menus to set your recorder, to view your playlist, etc. I would highly recommend this product.
