The Best of George January 30, 2010 Catherine Peace (St. Petersburg, FL USA) I enjoyed this when it was first out and have often referenced, repeated, and enjoyed parts of it still. I bought this for my grown daughter who enjoys it as much as I have.
I like Carlin's angry rants better August 10, 2009 ninjasuperstar (Iowa) I started listening to George Carlin far after he had established himself in comedy. The Carlin I know is the ranting potty mouth from his album Back in Town. I enjoyed his jokes, style, and ideas, so I decided to go back to Carlin's roots, to the seven words you can't say on television and the whole routine enclosing them: Class Clown.
The first noticeable difference between the Carlin in Back in Town and the Carlin in Class Clown is his voice. In Class Clown, he sounds like a gentle California hippie. He doesn't yet have that gravelly bark of his later years. In Back in Town, he sounds like an old guy in wheel chair. I prefer the chair, because it feels like Carlin is waiting for applause too often in Class Clown instead of aggressively taking the jokes to them.
I also didn't care much for most of the jokes in Class Clown. I am not sure what to call them except lame. The opening bit about the biography of a class clown and comedian starts off interesting but becomes childish quickly. Catholic jokes simply aren't that funny or provocative. Most of the jokes are variations of these two concepts.
It isn't until the album is almost over that its two gems sparkle: Carlin's alternate lyrics to "America the Beautiful" and his funny analysis of the seven words you can't say on television. These glimpses of his future self are the only parts of Class Clown that I find worth listening to.
Great, but buy the collection instead January 26, 2009 W. R. Torres (chicago) hey - this record/CD is great - it's some of carlin's best - there's a 2-disc/3-lp set called Classic Gold that has this, plus Occupation: Foole and FM & AM - there's some slight overlap in the material, but I'd recommend that over just this one CD any day
The First use of "Seven Words" November 17, 2008 Arthur A. Roy (Hamden, CT United States) This is where George rolled out "The Seven Word you can't say on Television". Need I say more?
happier than... September 5, 2008 Mark Lennon it arrived very quickly and was in perfect condition. i laughed like i did in the 70's!
