Amazon.com Product Description
Enjoy up to 30 hours of tapeless digital recording alongside the ability to pause live television and perform slow-motion and instant-replay commands with Sony's SVR-2000 digital video recorder. The unit offers simultaneous record and playback directly from its built-in hard disk drive. Conduct high-speed search at 3x, 18x, and 60x normal speed in both forward and reverse, as well as forward and reverse frame advance.

Benefits of TiVo service include but are by no means limited to: Season Pass (TiVo automatically finds and records every episode of a series all season long, even if the network schedule changes); TiVo Suggestions (the unit finds and records shows similar to your favorites); WishList (TiVo finds and records programs that feature your favorite actor, director, team, or even topic); Smart Recording (TiVo detects line-up changes for you and suggests programs to match your interests, if desired); Showcases (exclusive entertainment plus recording shortcuts from some of the most popular networks on TV); and TiVo Live TV guide (which provides listings for 14 days of programming).

For playback, a handy status bar shows you right where you are in a recorded program. A supplied multibrand remote operates key features on many brands of TVs and audio/video receivers. Connections include two sets of AV outputs, a single S-video output, and an RF (threaded coaxial) video input for cable or a local antenna. The unit is even software-upgradeable for compatibility with future features.

5 out of 5 stars Special ones can record manually,,pause live tv..rewind tv without a subscription   December 30, 2009
fwoods46
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R20L483YPLV6XM This is a video and written review of the rare ablility of this particular tivo to manual record. pause live tv, abd rewind live tv without a Tivo Subscription.
Looks and works great. This Series 1 TIVO is a rare one that can be used without a monthly Tivo subscription. Nice way to tinker with Tivo generally see how it works without a big investment or commitment. Just go to Manual Record. Without a subscription you can still pause and rewind live TV, and set manual recordings just like a VCR (for example every monday at 6 PM..or record current program..or schedule a recording for a certain date and certain time and certain channel for any length of time for a one time recording) You can also do the same by simply selecting "Repeat..poor person's Season Pass..alttle humor here on Amazon). Will do repeat recordings you have selected as long as you want..not just a couple weeks. Will do a whole season for you of say "Oprah" or "Desperate Housewives". If you would like you can have a program recording and watch a pre-recorded program or live tv at the same time by splitting the cable source..one to tivo the other to tv.
PRO..Works with CABLE..DIRECT TV..OR DISH NETWORK.
CON..DOES NOT WORK ANTENNA WITH OVER THE AIR PROGRAMMING.
You will not get a guide or be able to do season passes without a subscription. All you need is your handy TV Guide or TV Listings from the Sunday paper to do Manual Recordings without Tivo Service. Subscriptions are still available for series 1 if you want to do that it will work fine and then you will get a Tivo guide and Tivo Season Pass too.

1 out of 5 stars Without a subscription and the latest software version it is a paperweight   September 17, 2009

Be aware that there are SOME SVR 2000's that allow manual recording without a subscription. If you do NOT have the older software version, without a subscription the SVR 2000 is little more than a doorstop or paperweight.

1 out of 5 stars Abandoned by Sony, broken twice   December 4, 2008

The SVR-2000 is a discontinued TIVO DVR made by Sony. I bought it thinking that the Sony name would guaranty higher quality and reliability. I also bought the TIVO lifetime service. (Lifetime means the lifetime of the machine.)

Within a year it crashed. We called Sony service only to find that they had stopped making all TIVO's and out-sourced TIVO service to a firm in Pennsylvania. There was only one choice for service - pay almost $100 for a complete referb. It worked for 5 more years and died when we had a power failure. I will not fix it again. I will lose my lifetime warranty.

It would have earned a higher rating, but with no support from Sony, I do not feel that anyone should buy one.

2 out of 5 stars Good while it lasted   October 16, 2008

My SVR 2000 remote control just quit and can't be found anywhere, except on eBay for 49.99
AND the newest review here says the unit won't work after Feb 2009 anyway. So I guess I go shopping.
I've had it since May of 2003, so it has served me well. I'm lost without my Pause,Replay, and instant Record.
Sony is no longer making this unit.
