 Be careful about dealing with Tivo July 28, 2010

Just a warning about Tivo that should make you think thrice about dealing with these people:
- Had a two-year HD have an outright failure in March. Disk apparently died.
- Bought another from Amazon -- one of the Premiere models -- and it died pretty quickly as well. Returned it a week or so later.
Didn't call back to cancel subscription -- and finally did, and told I would get charged for the full remaining contract term because I didn't call back in 30 days after their product failure.
Okay, my bad. The point is -- two product failures in the space of a few weeks is pretty unconscionable. The 'we're still going to stick you with the contract terms even though our product failed (twice)' ... well, reader draw your own conclusion.

For years I had a ReplayTV which performed flawlessly, but was dated. When the HDD finally bit the dust, I knew it was time to upgrade to something that would give me many of the same features while also allowing me to record in HD.
The Tivo Premier XL has all the features I was looking for. Contrary to some of the reviews I read, it never crashes. The transition from HD to SD menus doesn't take all that long and isn't that big of a deal. It streams my Netflix Watch Instantly Queue movies without a hiccup and in HD. The season pass feature is awesome. Overall, I'm thrilled with the Tivo.

I got tired of the high cost of cable and put up a state-of-the-art UHF/VHF antenna. The HD picture is better than cable because it is not compressed. My only problem was without my cable DVR, I had no way to record in HD. After doing some internet research, I decided to buy the TiVo Premiere XL with the lifetime subscription. Now I have high def recordings that are every bit as good as the cable DVR, maybe better, and still no monthly bill! I have more than just Over The Air recording capability. I have music videos from Music Choice, Internet Radio like I had with cable, You Tube on the big screen, slideshows from my computer, and TV schedules two weeks in advance. There are movie rentals and other options I haven't even tried yet. Everything I have tried works. I bought a router and ethernet cable and had no problem setting it up. Two thumbs up, TiVo works great!

We've had a Series2 Tivo for 3+ years and love it. Never had a problem with it. We bought the Tivo Premiere XL for HD recording and the space. The only thing we don't like are the HD menus; they are way too slow to navigate. Hopefully Tivo will upgrade the software and make the new menus worth using. Thank goodness there is an option to change back to the SD menus. We only use the HD menus to check how much space is left. We read many mixed reviews on this product and were actually leery of buying it. But it has worked almost perfectly. It froze up once the first day we set it up, and since we changed over to the SD menus, we haven't had any problems. Tivo is so much better than the Comcast DVR we used for HD recording the past year, and we were so glad to get rid of it. We love Tivo!

This is a much better solution to the poor DVR products I would rent from the cable companies. Their poor workmanship drove me to buy TiVo Premiere XL eventually. My DISH DVR was great when I had satellite, and TiVo is the only one that was comparable in quality. Considering TiVo owns the patent on the product, I wasn't surprised. Since this is the first time I've bought a TiVo, I did not expect to pay a fee for TiVo service on top of paying more than $600 to get the box and adapter. That annoyed me a bit. Overall, TiVo is a very good product. It responds quickly and delivers a quality picture. It can also hold a ton of recordings (more than DISH DVR). I went to Florida for 10 days, and when I returned, only 27% of my memory was used for recordings (and I record a lot of stuff). One downside was the one-way connection to the cable company. If I had known I couldn't get PPV or On Demand from my cable company, I would have hesitated. I'm not sure I would have still made the purchase knowing I couldn't get PPV. Since TiVo is connected to my widescreen HDTV, getting a cable box in another room with a regular TV is a small consolation. Hard to throw PPV parties with that. I can get On Demand from Amazon and Blockbuster, and I can also get Netflix and download directly to the DVR, but I rarely watch On Demand. Ending on the positive, TiVo customer service is great and respond quickly. The initial issues I had with my set-up working with the cable company were addressed quickly, and there was no finger pointing that was not legitimate, and they were addressed by Time Warner Cable quickly, also. The quality of service received since purchasing my TiVo make the other annoyances look much smaller.
